A Wet Weekend at The Urban Market

We spent Saturday running our stall for the second time ever at The Urban Market in Greengate Square, Salford. This is a market full of some great traders of food, drink, furniture, art, crafts and homewares that has yet to be discovered by the hoards of weekend shoppers who are unknowlingly just a few short steps from this excellent alternative shopping experience.

Other than the slight lack of shoppers, another problem we experienced was resisting the temptation to spend any money made on our fellow stallholders’ wares! Having the lovely Treats Bake Shop right next to us, with their delicate and delicious cupcakes and monster sized brownies, proved temptation too much and we were soon purchasing and tucking into their treats, as well as taking a bag full home at the end of the day!

The perfect accompaniment to the aforementioned cakes was provided by the excellent MCR Coffee Co., a truly independent and original coffee shop in a world of off the shelf identikit coffee brands. A sticky toffee coffee was just the thing to get me enthused at the start of a particularly wet Saturday! They must have known everyone would need a bit of cheering up as they sent the smiliest barista I’ve ever seen to man their stall!

Drink of a stronger nature was on hand from The Ale Man and his fine craft beer, certainly one of the more popular stalls and definitely somewhere I will need to be shopping at in the run up to Christmas. Talking of Christmas, our other market stall neighbour, Ellie Magpie, had brought some beautiful Christmas bits and pieces. If only I had that cottage in country along with an industrial snow machine, I could fill it with all of Ellie’s great pieces to create the perfect Christmas scene!

It might be a little early to think too much about Christmas, but we used the day to launch our new range of Northern Letters Christmas Cards, an alternative to the usual cards all featuring our fun alphabet of letters that give them a nice northern twist!

Given the great selection of stalls, it’s a real shame that nobody seems to know about this great monthly market. Its next outing is the last weekend of November – Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th. We’ll certainly be there again for at least one of, if not both days and it would be great to see it get the visitor numbers it deserves! Find out more about it on the Visit Salford website and tell all your friends and hopefully we’ll see you there next time!
